Gender & Social Justice

Undergraduate Courses

Gender Studies courses can lead to a Minor in Gender Studies, or can count towards the Combined Honours B.A. in Global Peace and Social Justice. In Gender Studies courses you’ll learn in creative, collaborative, and experiential ways. Our courses use interdisciplinary, feminist approaches to investigate how gender and sexuality affect people’s experiences in the world, and how these intersect with other identities and social locations. We strive for learning beyond the classroom and the computer, to ask questions and take on projects that will contribute to social justice in our communities.

GENDERST 1A03 – Gender, Race, Culture, Power (TERM 1 – FALL 2023)

An interdisciplinary introduction to Gender Studies and Critical Race Theory focusing on how gender and race shape and are shaped by culture (including popular culture), systems of power and institutional ideologies.
Two lectures, one tutorial (three hours); one term

GENDRST 2AA3 – Feminist Thought (TERM 1 – FALL 2023)

History of feminist theorizing, including liberal, radical, socialist, multiracial, poststructural, Black, postcolonial, third wave, intersectional, queer and global feminist approaches.

GENDRST 1A03 – Gender, Race, Culture, Power (TERM 2 – WINTER 2024)

An interdisciplinary introduction to Gender Studies and Critical Race Theory focusing on how gender and race shape and are shaped by culture (including popular culture), systems of power and institutional ideologies.

GENDRST 1AA3 – Gender, Feminism and Social Justice  (TERM 2 – WINTER 2024)

An interdisciplinary and intersectional introduction to feminism as a tool for critical analysis and as a shaping force deployed (or challenged) by activists in diverse movements to make and sustain social change.

GENDRST 2BB3 – Images of the Divine Feminie  (TERM 2 – WINTER 2024)

An examination of some of the ways the divine has been portrayed as feminine in diverse cultures.
